What is the first step in a vision therapy program?
A comprehensive vision examination is necessary before starting vision therapy. Following the exam, your eye care provider can determine if further testing is warranted and if vision therapy is recommended.
What is Vision Therapy?
Vision therapy is a treatment program that is designed to treat vision problems that can contribute to learning disabilities, visual-motor difficulties (eye-hand coordination), vision problems secondary to a brain injury, and visual processing deficiencies. Some visual conditions cannot be treated with glasses, contact lenses and/or patching alone, therefore an individualized program of vision therapy is essential in these cases. Vision therapy has been found to be effective for treating problems like learning-related vision problems, amblyopia (lazy eye), strabismus (reduced eye alignment/eye turn), double vision, eye tracking difficulties, eye focusing inability, and challenges with eye teaming.
How does vision therapy work?
It uses progressive vision exercises performed under the supervision of your eye care provider. Each set of exercises is tailored to meet the individual visual needs of a patient. These exercises are done 1-2 times per week in sessions lasting 30 minutes to a full hour. The exercises are designed to continue until visual processing problems show improvement.
